Hungary joins NATO coalition for demining Ukraine
Hungary has joined forces with several NATO member states in demining efforts in Ukraine, Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said on Facebook on Feb. 15.
Hungary has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with 20 other NATO member states during a ministerial meeting in Brussels to establish a Coalition for Mining Removal, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.
"One of the most urgent tasks in Ukraine, which affects the daily lives of the population is demining," he said.
The Hungarian National Defense contributed to the activities of the Lithuanian-led coalition with mine removal training, he said.
As of January 2024, 174,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory are contaminated with Russian mines and unexploded ordnance, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
It will take three to five years to de-mine the Black and Azov Seas after the end of active hostilities, the Ukrainian Navy said.
