President Katalin Novak has finally signed off on the appointment of Fedir
Shandor as Ukraine’s Ambassador, Hungarian TV channel ATV reported on Aug. 8,
citing unnamed diplomatic sources.
Shandor is a professor at the Uzhhorod National University, and currently serves in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Ukraine had requested approval for Shandor's appointment to Budapest back in March.
According to the publication, the alleged reason for the lengthy process was that the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not wish to engage with the President of Hungary.
Shandor's credentials will now be sent to be certified by Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto.
The report said that Novak's official decision will be published in the Hungarian Gazette after Shandor arrives in Budapest and presents his credentials to the President.
On July 16, Hungarian news portal Telex reported that Novak had accepted an invitation from the Ukrainian government to participate in the upcoming Crimean Platform meeting on Aug. 23 in Kyiv. She also plans to visit Zakarpattia Oblast, which borders Hungary and is home to a sizeable Hungarian diaspora.
