The United States will continue to provide security assistance to Ukraine amid Russia’s new cross-border incursion in Kharkiv Oblast, White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said at a press briefing on May 10.
The White House also suspects that Russia may be preparing for a larger-scale offensive in the Kharkiv area.
“It is certainly possible that the Russians are setting themselves up for a larger assault on Kharkiv,” Reuters quotes Kirby.
He specified that there are “signs” that Moscow is preparing to deploy long-range weapons “within range” of Kharkiv City.
“You're not going to do that if you're not also thinking about some other larger assault directly on the city,” Kirby explains.
Earlier on May 10, U.S. President Joe Biden approved a new $400 million military aid package for Ukraine, consisting largely of ammunition and armored vehicles.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reported that Russian invasion forces attempted an assault near Vovchansk at 5 a.m. on May 10. Reserve units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were sent to Kharkiv Oblast, and "battles of varying intensity are ongoing," the ministry said.
The head of the Kharkiv Oblast Military Administration, Oleh Synehubov, earlier confirmed the intensification of shelling in Vovchansk and the work of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups. He believes the enemy grouping does not pose a threat to the city of Kharkiv.
DeepState analysts also reported that the aggressor has intensified its activities in Kharkiv Oblast. The Russian Federation is trying to enter and gain a foothold in several settlements along the border, including the villages of Strilecha–Krasne–Pylna–Borysivka. There are also attempts by the enemy to enter the settlements of Hatyshche and Pletenivka.
Kharkiv regional authorities began evacuating civilians from the Vovchansk municipality.
