German Defense Ministry confirms transfer of 25 Belgian Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine

Germany has
transferred 25 more Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine after they were bought
from Belgium by arms maker Rheinmetall, the Germany Defense Ministry said
on Aug. 9.
“The military aid package [for Ukraine] includes 25 Leopard 1 tanks, five armored repair and recovery vehicles, and two train tanks,” the ministry stated.
Reports emerged in the Belgian media on Aug. 7 that a batch of the country’s Leopard 1 tanks had been bought by “unknown country” and would be transferred to Ukraine.
The German newspaper Handelsblatt subsequently reported that Rheinmetall had purchased 50 tanks from Belgium in order to re-equip them, and would then send up to 30 of them to Ukraine.
The tanks in questions were decommissioned by the Belgium several years ago. In order to save money, the country’s military command decided to scrap its tank fleet.
Belgium had refused to donate its decommissioned Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine due to “extremely high operational costs.”
