The French government discussed the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO during recent a Defense Council meeting at the Elysée Palace, French newspaper Le Monde reported on June 20.
Paris apparently believes that offering Ukraine the prospect of NATO membership could deter Russia from further engaging in the conflict and encourage Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to participate in negotiations.
Polish President Andrzej Duda recently called for Ukraine's acceptance into NATO, while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for separate security guarantees.
The upcoming NATO Summit, scheduled for July 11-12 in Vilnius, Lithuania, carries significant importance for Ukraine, as it hopes to receive a clear and resolute signal affirming the alliance's readiness to welcome it as a member.
However, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed on June 19 that NATO leaders will not extend a formal invitation for Ukraine to join the alliance at the Vilnius summit.
