EU to extend legal protections for Ukrainians — Deputy PM Stefanishyna

The European Commission and Ukraine have agreed to extend the temporary protected status for Ukrainian citizens in the EU, to be revised when the security situation improves, Ukrainian Deputy PM Olha Stefanishyna said on May 9.
According to Stefanishyna, the current security conditions "do not allow for any other decision" regarding the legal status of Ukrainian refugees in Europe.
She added that she has been in constant communication with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, since Feb. 24, 2022. They reassess the situation every quarter.
“I had a conversation with her yesterday,” Ukrinform news agency quotes Stefanishyna.
“We have decided that the temporary protection status will be extended because the security conditions do not allow for any other decision.”
The officials agreed that the protected status for Ukrainians will be reviewed following an improvement in domestic security. Stefanishyna added the issue is not related to parallel efforts to incentivize draft-eligible Ukrainian abroad to update their military registration and obey future call-ups.
The European Union introduced legal protection mechanisms for Ukrainian citizens on March 4, 2022. It was later extended through March 2025.
