EU mulls new sanctions against Iran over ballistic missile transfers to Russia — Reuters

The European Union is considering “new and significant measures” against Iran in response to potential ballistic missile transfers to Russia for use against Ukraine, Reuters reported on March 12, citing draft conclusions of the upcoming EU summit.
The European Council’s draft text calls on third parties to immediately cease providing material support to Russia’s war against Ukraine, Reuters said.
Reports of potential Iranian missile transfers to aid Russia in the war against Ukraine are “very concerning,” said European officials.
The EU is “prepared to respond swiftly and in coordination with international partners, including with new and significant measures against Iran,” the draft conclusions said.
Washington believes Iran is readying to supply Russia with short-range ballistic missiles, The Wall Street Journal reported on Nov. 21, 2023.
Despite official denials, Iran reportedly supplies drones, materials, and technologies to Russia for its conflict with Ukraine, while receiving cyber weapons, Western arms, and equipment “captured on the battlefield” in return.
A Feb. 21 Reuters report based on six sources indicated Iran sent around 400 ballistic missiles to Russia. The shipments reportedly commenced in January 2024 following negotiations between Tehran and Moscow.
The U.S. has no information suggesting Iran has supplied ballistic missiles to Russia, White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said on Feb. 22.
Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate (HUR), refuted claims on Feb. 25 of Iran transferring long-range missiles to Russia, asserting that such information does not align with reality.
