Ukraine’s failure against Russia could embolden dictatorial regimes to target democratic nations, UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said in an interview with The Telegraph on Feb. 1.Western countries should be “very, very clear that this is existential… it’s not just about Ukraine,” Shapps said.
“Everyone is watching — the Iranians are looking. Do we just run out of puff, run out of patience, and go away? China will be watching in the Indo-Pacific, North Korea will be watching.”
“It is vitally important to our own national interests, and definitely to the Western civilized world, that Ukraine is successful in their own country.”
Shapps would use next week’s NATO Defense Ministers’ meeting to urge member states to meet their commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defense, he said.
“Regimes that do not believe in democracy are watching, and we need to demonstrate that the democratic path is the path that always wins,” Shapps said.
Western militaries, as well as civilians, need to be prepared for an “all-out war” with Russia that may significantly affect their lives, Britain’s Sky News reported on Jan. 19, citing Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer, chairman of the NATO Military Committee.
British Army Chief General, Patrick Sanders warned that the people would have to join the fight in the event of a war with Russia.
New military threats could emerge by the end of the decade and Europe must ensure it can defend itself, Germany’s defense minister Boris Pistorius told German newspaper Tagespiegel on Jan. 19.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
