Russia could attack NATO state in three to five years amid faster arms build-up, Danish intel says
New intelligence shows that Russia is rearming faster than expected and could attack a NATO country within three to five years, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said on Feb. 9, Reuters reports.
"Russia's capacity to produce military equipment has increased tremendously," he said.
It cannot be ruled out that within three to five years Moscow "will test Article 5 and NATO's solidarity."
"That was not NATO's assessment in 2023. This is new knowledge that is coming to the fore now," said the Danish defense chief.
There is no direct threat to Denmark, but the Alliance could face hybrid attacks aimed at destabilizing one of its member states.
"Russia potentially has the will to do so," Poulsen said. “Now they can also have the ability to have a military capability earlier than we expected. There is reason to be genuinely concerned.”
The change in the threat assessment comes after other European NATO countries issued similar warnings in recent weeks.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in January that the alliance should be prepared for a Russian attack on NATO countries within five to eight years.
Bild, citing its own sources in the intelligence of a European country, reported that Russia may try to attack Europe in late 2024 or early 2025, when the United States will be "without a leader" and thus will be able to come to the aid of European states only after some delay.
