Conditions for Ukraine’s accession to NATO unknown, says FM Kuleba
The conditions for Ukraine’s accession to NATO remain unknown, despite discussions with the alliance’s leadership, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in an interview with RFE/RL’s Ukrainian service on July 11.
“That’s the problem,” Kuleba said.
“That is, when will the conditions be met? What are the conditions? Who should they be formulated? What are they? Once again, our position is that there are all conditions for inviting Ukraine to become a NATO member. That is, we have fundamentally different positions here. Their position is that there are some conditions that must be met.”
Kyiv will continue to work with allies to ensure that everything does not stand still, “while we move forward,” Kuleba added.
The United States and Germany were the most conservatively disposed towards Ukraine’s future membership in NATO, but there are nuances, the minister said.
“Knowing many nuances of what was happening behind the scenes, I can say that the United States played an important, decisive role in the fact that the word ‘invitation’ appeared in the text at all,” Kuleba said.
“Not in the wording we’re satisfied with, but in principle. And Germany, after all, didn’t resist this either. Therefore, the world is a little more complicated than just black and white.”
NATO member states on July 11 agreed on a unified communique concerning Ukraine’s membership in the alliance, making no timeframe commitments as to when Kyiv might receive an invitation to join.
The communique noted that Ukraine would be invited to join the alliance once member states agree and all prerequisites have been satisfied, without specifying what those prerequisites are, exactly.
The document also remarked that the alliance would aid Ukraine in implementing reforms on its pathway to prospective membership.
