China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Mao Nin, addressing Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s recent nuclear threats, urged all parties to exercise restraint during a press conference on March 1.
“In January 2022, the leaders of the five nuclear states issued a joint statement emphasizing that nuclear war is impossible to win or wage,” Nin said.
“China consistently advocates for all states possessing nuclear weapons to support the concept of shared security and maintain global strategic balance and stability. Under current circumstances, all parties should work together to promote de-escalation and reduce strategic risks.”
She also urged all parties to maintain “calm and restraint” and build a balanced, effective, and resilient European security architecture through dialogue and consultations.
Putin began threatening strikes against Western countries during his address to the Federal Assembly on Feb. 29, asserting Russia’s possession of necessary weaponry. The dictator claimed that Russia’s strategic nuclear forces were in full readiness.
He warned of “tragic consequences” for NATO if it deployed forces to Ukraine. The United States criticized Putin’s recent statements on the possibility of nuclear war. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said that it was not the first time they witnessed Vladimir Putin’s irresponsible rhetoric. Miller emphasized that a leader of a nuclear-armed state should refrain from making such remarks.
Russia has rehearsed using tactical nuclear weapons at an early stage of conflict with a major world power, the Financial Times reported on Feb. 28, citing leaked military files that include training scenarios for an invasion by China.
