Bulgaria prepares for snap parliamentary elections in June, sixth in three years
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev appointed Dimitar Glavchev, a former parliamentary speaker and head of the National Audit Office, as interim prime minister to prepare for snap parliamentary elections on June 9, Bloomberg reported on April 9.
This will be the country’s sixth vote in just over three years.
The decision came after the two largest parties, led by former prime ministers Boyko Borissov and Kiril Petkov, failed to renew their coalition agreement that kept the government in office for nine months.
The political deadlock hindered Bulgaria’s efforts to adopt the euro and receive funding from the European Union, Bloomberg writes.
Bulgaria had previously failed to form a government after Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov resigned on March 5. The GERB party came first in last April's elections, winning 69 seats in the 240-seat parliament. The "We Continue to Change" bloc won 64 seats.
