Belarus alleges Ukrainian military buildup near border, labels situation tense

The situation on the border between Belarus and Ukraine is "tense" and escalating, said Vadim Lukashevich, the deputy commander of the country's special operations forces, according to the Belarusian media outlet Belta on June 29.
A coalition of Western countries has allegedly "unleashed a hot conflict" near Belarus, and Minsk is "doing everything to maintain peace on Belarusian soil," according to officials.
The Belarusian Armed Forces are reportedly concerned about the increase in Ukrainian "troops, weapons, and military equipment" near the border, along with the alleged deployment of additional air defense systems and equipment near Ukraine’s Zhytomyr Oblast.
Andriy Kovalenko, head of the National Security and Defense Council's Center for Countering Disinformation, believes that Minsk's statements are part of a Russian information operation. He claims that Russian "military correspondents" are accusing Kyiv of allegedly "preparing an attack on Belarus." The real threat, however, comes from Russian subversive groups in Belarus.
This follows an earlier statement by the State Border Committee of Belarus about an alleged buildup of Ukrainian troops on the border, including heavy weapons, armored personnel carriers, American Bradleys, HIMARS MLRS, M777 howitzers, German Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, and other weapons.
The Ukrainian State Border Guard Service (SBGS) maintains that there is no provocation in defending the country’s borders and that it has been building up defensive fortifications.
Earlier, on June 21, Belarus declared the start of a sudden check to assess the readiness of its Armed Forces units and formations to carry out their assigned tasks.
This does not pose a threat to Ukraine, according to SBGS spokesperson Andriy Demchenko.
