Associates of ex-MP Medvedchuk sentenced to prison for plotting coup

Four associates of former pro-Russian MP Viktor Medvedchuk have been sentenced to prison for helping to prepare a coup, Ukraine’s SBU security service reported on Telegram on Aug. 10.
The convicts include a Russian citizen – a military intelligence officer who was in direct contact with representatives of the Russian presidential administration and the aggressor state's special services.
The SBU’s report notes that the attackers planned to "synchronize" the coup with the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. They aimed to seize power through puppet NGOs in Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine.
The SBU reports that these "pro-Kremlin cells" were supposed to initiate a so-called "national assembly" in the capital, the organizers of which planned to "approve a resolution" to remove the top military and political leadership of Ukraine from power.
If this failed, the criminals planned to move to a "forceful scenario". To do this, they formed their own "combat wing", in which they tried to involve up to 500 armed men.
Reportedly, to find "candidates" they used their own connections among supporters of the Russian regime.
As a result of a multi-stage special operation, SBU officers exposed the organizers in a timely manner, documented their subversive activities, and detained them at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.
They were found guilty of actions aimed at the violent change or overthrow of the constitutional order, or seizure of state power.
The Russian citizen was sentenced to 10 years, one accomplice received seven years, and the two others received five years in prison each.
