Shevchenko’s emotional EURO 2024 tribute to Ukrainian soldiers – Video
Andriy Shevchenko, president of the Ukrainian Football Association, gave an emotional speech to Ukrainian fans in Munich hours before the Ukrainian national team's first Euro 2024 match against Romania on June 17.
“Today we have one team on the pitch, but a million people
on the frontline,” he said expressing gratitude to the Ukrainian Armed Forces
for their courage and bravery.
This follows his recent call for Euro 2024 participating
countries to support Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression.
Earlier in the day, Shevchenko unveiled the remains of a
stand from Kharkiv’s Sonyashnyi (Sunny) Stadium, which was damaged in a Russian
missile strike in 2022. It was installed by Ukrainians in Munich and is
intended to draw international attention to Russia’s war crimes.
The UEFA Euro 2024 Championship is held in Germany from June
14 to July 14.
Ukraine is competing in Group E with Romania, Slovakia, and
Belgium.
Earlier, on June 13, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser
said that an additional security arrangements would be made for the
Ukrainian national football team competing in the UEFA Euro 2024
championship.
