UK intelligence estimates 500,000 Russian troops killed in Ukraine

Around 500,000 Russian military personnel have been killed since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with most Russian casualties occurring since January 2023, British intelligence estimates cited by Sky News show.
Total Russian casualties, including those wounded, have reached approximately 1.5 million since February 2022, UK Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Rich Knighton said.
The overwhelming majority of those casualties occurred after January 2023, while Russia gained only about 2% of Ukraine’s territory over that period, he said.
“I think those figures clearly demonstrate the senseless and futile loss of human life for such marginal gains and for such an illegitimate objective of President Putin,” Knighton said in prepared remarks to journalists.
Referring to the estimated 500,000 Russian troops killed, Knighton described the human cost of the war inside Russia.
“That means there will be half a million photographs hanging on the walls of devastated and darkened homes across Russia,” he said. “It means half a million families will never again see their father, son, brother or husband.”
Knighton also highlighted the economic consequences of the war for Russia.
The invasion “has resulted in slower Russian economic growth, weaker consumer demand and persistently high inflation, and the price being paid by the Russian economy and by the prosperity and prospects of its people is enormous,” he said.
Anne Keast-Butler, head of Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), has also said that nearly 500,000 Russian military personnel have been killed since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Ukraine’s General Staff reported on Sept. 9 that total Russian personnel losses since February 2022 had surpassed 1.5 million killed and wounded.
