‘Dovbush’ – biggest film in Ukrainian history – finally hits the big screens
The Ukrainian adventure-historical film ‘Dovbush’ made its debut on the big screens after premieres across the globe. Director Oles Sanin shared this insight with Ukrinform on Aug. 24.
Over 20 countries acquired rights to ‘Dovbush’, with premieres taking place in seven of them — the Baltic states, Germany, Slovakia, South Korea, and Israel — on Aug. 23-24.
In a bid to bring the Ukrainian film to global audiences faster, the creators opted out of Class A festivals, said the director.
The movie focuses on 18th Century rebel leader Oleksa Dovbush’s struggle for retribution against Polish nobility in the Carpathian Mountains.
Dovbush is Ukraine’s most-expensive film of all-time, costing around UAH 120 million ($4.4 million using the 2018 exchange rate when the film was shot). The high expenses are related to over 3,000 individuals used in the filming, extensive work on authentic costuming, and the building of a fortress near Kyiv used in the shooting.
