Record number of Ukrainian women to compete at Australian Open

A record number of Ukrainian tennis players will take part in the Australian Open, a hard-court Grand Slam tennis tournament founded in 1905.
Elina Svitolina, Anhelina Kalinina, Lesia Tsurenko, and Marta Kostyuk entered the singles draw directly, while Dayana Yastremska, Yulia Starodubtseva, and Daria Snigur successfully qualified for the tournament, which will be held from Jan. 14 to 28.
In previous years, Ukraine's best result at the Australian Open was six players in 2008. It is also the third time that seven Ukrainian tennis players will participate in a Grand Slam tournament, after Roland Garros in 2007 and Wimbledon in 2008.
The legendary Rafael Nadal will not participate in this Grand Slam after suffering a minor muscle injury during his comeback tournament at the Brisbane International.
Earlier, six-seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia defeated Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk with in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 500 tournament in Adelaide, Australia.
