Ukraine builds Zaporizhzhya–Marhanets aqueduct in record time
A new water supply pipeline connecting Zaporizhzhya and Marhanets, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, is now operational, contractor Autostrada announced on June 17.
“Autostrada built the main water pipeline from scratch in seven months, from design to implementation,” company founder Maksym Shkil said in a Facebook post.
“This is a record-breaking timeframe. Usually, developing such projects takes up to a year and a half. We didn't have that time, given the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the destruction of Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant dam [in June 2023].”
According to Shkil, the construction was completed in February. The pipeline spans 77.9 kilometers and has a throughput of 150,000 cubic meters of water per day. Six pumping stations and a centralized control center manage the flow of water.
The pipeline system is fully automated and operates on a continuous power supply source. To ensure this, both primary and backup power supply lines were built with a total length of 26 kilometers and capacities of 6 kV and 35 kV, respectively.
The pipes and pumping stations are located underground to protect them from enemy attacks.
Shkil added that the government still owes Autostrada $37 million for the project.
“Despite the water pipeline being 100% ready in February, the state owes Autostrada UAH 1.5 billion for this project alone,” he said.
“I hope this issue will be resolved soon.”
The Kakhovka reservoir was drained after Russian troops blew up the Kakhovka HPP dam on June 6, 2023. To supply Zaporizhzhya with water, the construction of new pipelines began in July 2023.
