Polish farmers threaten to blockade Ukraine border crossing
Farmers in Poland are dissatisfied with Ukrainian grain imports flooding the market, to the point of threatening to blockade the Dorohusk-Jagodzin border crossing in protest, Polish news outlet RMF24 reported on April 7.
According to the report, the activist farmers plan to block the crossing on April 12-15, after increased grain imports from Ukraine led to a sharp drop in purchase prices in Poland.
“We are expecting our requirements to be fulfilled, not for a minister (to visit) the border,” said president of farming organization Kółko Rolnicze, Władysław Serafin.
At the same time, already protesting farmers in the Polish city of Szczecin announced plans to step up their protest activity next week.
On April 7, Polish government spokesperson Piotr Müller announced that Ukrainian grain would be transported through Poland to third countries without unloading.
As previously reported, Polish farmers have been protesting against a significant influx of Ukrainian grain to the Polish market, which was supposed to merely transit through Poland to other destinations.
This issue led to the resignation of the Polish Minister of Agriculture Henryk Kowalczyk on April 5, replaced by Robert Telus on April 6.
During an official visit to Warsaw, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki discussed the issue of Ukrainian grain transit through Poland, later promising it will be resolved in near future.
