Poland may ban more Ukrainian imports – PM Tusk
Warsaw is considering expanding the current
ban on agricultural
imports from Ukraine to Poland if the EU fails to come up with an
acceptable solution to protect Polish farmers, Polish Prime Minister Donald
Tusk said on Feb. 27.
The potential further trade restrictions would target more of Ukraine’s food exports going through the Polish border. While driving the price of food in the EU down, cheap Ukrainian produce eats into the profit margins of farmers in neighboring EU countries.
“We are discussing the possibility of expanding the embargo to other products if the EU does not find a more effective way to shield the Polish and European markets,” Tusk said in Prague.
Polish farmers, protesting imports at the Ukrainian border, last week dumped grain destined for other countries from a freight train on the Polish-Ukrainian border. They are also pushing to expand the ban to include other goods, such as fruit, eggs, and meat.
Poland's Agriculture Minister, Czesław Sekerski, indicated that ongoing negotiations with Ukraine are aimed at imposing mutually agreed restrictions on agricultural imports and are in their final stages.
On Feb. 23, Ukraine presented its plan to resolve the issue, endorsing European Commission's restrictions on agricultural exports from Ukraine, specifically concerning the export limitations on poultry meat, eggs, and sugar. Additionally, without Poland's permission, grains, corn, sunflower, and rapeseed from Ukraine will not enter the Polish market.
