‘No place in civilized countries’ – Scandinavia boycotts manufacturer of Oreo, Milka, and Toblerone
Scandinavia
has announced the boycott of products from Mondelez International – a
confectioner that produces Oreo, Milka, and Toblerone – because of its business
in Russia.
Norwegian Air and SAS, the SJ railway group, the Strawberry hotel chain, the Elkjop retail chain, the Fjord shipping group, and the Norwegian Football Association have all recently announced the termination of cooperation and sales of Mondelez products, Reuters reports.
Mondelez is a popular manufacturer in Sweden and Norway through its local chocolate producers Freia and Marabou.
Norway’s foreign ministry said it planned to meet with both the manufacturer and the boycotting companies but said it would not recommend any solutions.
“Companies and individuals must make independent choices about what to buy and with whom to trade,” said Norwegian Foreign Affairs Ministry State Secretary Erling Rimestad.
Scandinavian companies said that the decision to stop selling Mondelez products is based on the decision of Ukraine’s National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NACP) to include Mondelez on its list of international sponsors of war.
Mondelez says that the company condemns the war, does not sell Russian-made products in Norway, supports only “limited” activities inside Russia, and has suspended investments and advertising in Russia.
Ukraine’s NACP announced that Mondelez’s Russian branch increased its profit in 2022 by 303% to $339 million, while the company’s revenue amounted to more than $1 billion (+38% for the year).
They added that Mondelez replenished the aggressor’s budget by more than $61 million in taxes.
