Independent monitoring groups reported that Makhachkala is Russia’s only ice-free, deep-water port on the Caspian Sea, operating year-round to handle bulk dry and liquid cargo. The port processed more than 2.9 million tons of grain in the first eight months of the year, alongside roughly 1.83 million tons of liquid cargo.
The facility features comprehensive shipping infrastructure, including dedicated berths for bulk and container cargo, a major grain terminal, and direct rail and road connections.
The port operates its own transport fleet and features six berths spanning over 900 meters, allowing it to handle up to six vessels simultaneously.
Sea drones struck the resort city of Sochi on the evening of September 9, sparking a fire along the waterfront.
Local Russian social media channels earlier reported a combined attack on the city involving naval drones and UAVs. Videos posted by eyewitnesses appeared to show explosions and gunfire, as well as a large fire near the port.
