The Ministry will coordinate negotiations on environmental and climate issues, as well as energy sectors, including nuclear energy, energy efficiency, renewable energy, electricity and gas markets, security of supply, use of gas and oil storage facilities, Trans-European Energy Networks (TEN-E), energy labeling, and eco-design.
The European Commission's Energy Reform Assessment Report recognized positive changes in the energy sector, including the implementation of the Law on Prevention of Abuse in Wholesale Energy Markets to comply with the REMIT Regulation and the continuation of the corporate reform of the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU).
"We have done a lot, and the key thing is that we are implementing these reforms during the war,” said Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.
“We did not stop for a single day during the aggression and kept moving forward. We have a lot of work ahead of us — the integration of the electricity and gas markets and the introduction of European rules. And on this path, we feel the support of our partners."
The REMIT Regulation is a set of European rules and practices aimed at preventing abuse in wholesale energy markets and establishing liability for manipulation of wholesale energy market participants.
This follows the earlier June 25 announcement of the official start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU at the intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg.
"Today we are witnessing a historic moment," said European Council President Charles Michel.
"Following the European Council's decision in December 2023 to launch negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU, both countries are embarking on a real transformation towards full EU membership — a proud moment for both countries and a strategic step for the EU."
